Lucky Green Bird Contest

With St. Patrick's Day quickly approaching, this month's challenge comes a little earlier, and will be a little shorter than usual...

The prize at stake: A Lucky Irish Green Gift Package! And what, exactly is a Lucky Irish Green Gift Package?? It is a collection of handmade goods and thrift store treasures, guaranteed to make this year's St. Patrick's Day the best one ever!! The winner will receive:

1) One Green Energy CD-- the newly released album by The Irish Experience, which features clogging tracks by yours truly :)

2) One Clover-Adorned Mug, one of my latest thrift store finds

3) One set of wacky Clover Leaf Antennas! (You can't properly celebrate the holiday without them)

[special thank you to Noah for being such a good sport]

4) One "Good Luck Wood Duck" handmade photo greeting card
(This one is doubly GREEN-- made with recycled green card stock and secondhand thread, and comes with a 100% post consumer recycled envelope)

I would also include my Irish Drinking Socks in the package, but they are too dear to my heart to part with. Plus I don't think I would get very many entries for a pair of old stinky socks...
(Irish Drinking Sock--NOT included!)

To win this collection of fabulous green prizes, all you have to do is tell me what your favorite GREEN BIRD is and why you like the bird. A link to an online photo of the bird must also be included with your entry. The winner will be selected randomly out of all the entries.

Entries can either be emailed directly to me (aguavino@gmail.com) with the subject "Green Bird", or you can post your entry in a comment here on the good old blog. Be sure to include your email address so I can contact you if you're the lucky bird!

***DOUBLE YOUR LUCK*** Become a "Follower" of this blog, or subscribe to my mailing list to get a double entry to the contest! (that means I put your name into the hat twice)

This contest ends @ noon PST on (lucky) Friday the 13th!

GOOD LUCK!!

The wild parrots of Brooklyn! A lot of them nest near my apartment so I sometimes see parrots on my walks through Brooklyn. They are quite loud and large. I love seeing them.

  2. Alright then. My favorite green birds are the parrots of New Orleans. What's that, you say? Parrots, in... New Orleans? Why yes. Are they native? No. They're an introduced species. There are those that will tell you that they migrated there but, uh, as my former biogeography of birds teacher will tell you, they're a non-migratory species. They're actually fallout from the pet trade, believe it or not. New Orleans is a major port city; they get shipped up from South America, and over the years enough of them have escaped or been set free to establish a population. The semi-tropical environment there, with all its palm trees, combined with the utter lack of predators, has been a perfect place for them to flourish. And man, are they loud. As requested, a link to a picture:

    Often called Budgies, or Parakeets.

The reason I like them is they are so cheery, and comforting. Before you even open your eyes in the morning they are cheeping and tweeting the arrival of the new day. Not only are they beautiful, but they sound beautiful and are friendly, easy birds to care for. I had some for a time, I let a friend who was dying of cancer have them, her daughter had them for many years after. They made her short time on the planet so happy. So it was the least I could do.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  9. What a fantastic prize package giveaway!
I can see our rescue Beagle in the Clover Leaf Antennas now! I like the Green Heron; especially because it is one of the few tool-
using birds. It uses lures like bread crusts, insects, earthworms and feathers to attract small fish. Then, it eats the small fish it attracts. Many thanks, Cindi

  10. Thanks for letting me know, I didn't follow directions. I was distracted by a six year old. Where I live we don't have many green birds, but I remembered seeing this one at the zoo. It is so vibrant. I love color. Here's my link:
